I checked the blog. !!! Nice photos! They just whet my
appetite to go down to Kiwiland. Keep it up :)

Wow, what a wonderful idea - I've been trying to think of things I have seen recently which could match, but going to the local food store somehow doesn't seem to measure up.

Hey Brook!  I love the website, it's great....
but it is Lake Pukaki, not Matheson!

Val

(Thanks Val, I've made the appropriate changes)

Hi,

Next time you go to your favourite pub, have a look at the road signs along the way - it's Dyers Pass, not Dwyers Pass.

Cheers,
Hiro Protagonist

(Thanks. Changes made. Glad to see Snow Crash fans out there. )

(Thanks for all your help Hiro. I can't find the links problems you mention. What browser are you using?)

Very much enjoying your travelogue and photos.

Please post again on Usenet when the site has expanded, as I have
bookmarked your home page and wish to read more.

A big, but gentle pat on the back.  We are looking forward to our NZ trip come July (I know, dead of winter, but we're on a school schedule here in USA) and your diary and photos are great additions to the guidebooks we're reading.  Thanks so much and enjoy your stay.  Be safe.

Very enjoyable Brooklyn - as a born and bred South Islander living in the North Island for years it's  made me quite nostalgic.  I miss the mountains and yes, even the rain of the west coast.

An interesting read and photos. We have just got back from 3 weeks in NZ (2 in south and 1 in north) and have visited many of the places you mention. We were in the Camelot Cathedral square for 3 nights at the end of Feb, then Tekapo, Queenstown, Wanaka, Te Anau and Dunedin.
You'll enjoy the scenic flight - I went on one with Aspiring Air from Wanaka over Mt Aspiring, down Milford sound and landed there, then back over the Hollyford Valley & Glenorchy (while my wife was walking the Routeburn Track - I think we had about the best 2 days in March!). Superb scenery, I hope to have some photos up somewhere in a few days. Milford Sound is awesome.

(Let me know where you put your site Paul and we'll link to it.)

Places you should visit: Hanmer Springs [wonderful in cold weather], Punakaiki, Blackball, and you should definitely do the Haast pass. Karamea is great too - make sure you visit the Oparara arch & the mirror tarn.

Hiro Protagonist

(Thanks Hiro and thanks for the help with the links problem. I'll put in a couple of blank lines as a quick fix. We've been told to go to Hanmer and sit in the pool when there's snow on the ground. I've seen pictures of this and it look's magical.)

(About the Vans)

The one on the rt is a converted school  bus, the one on the left is a converted passenger van.
The way you do a conversion is only limited by your imaginaton and the carrying capacity of the vehicle chassis.
If you were here in the US I could refer you to  a partially converted bus with a back porch. I don't think it would be worth shipping it to NZ.

When travelling to Queenstown etc, you don't need to go all the way down and inland via Pleasant Point, you can turn off at Rangitata and go via Geraldine [nice little town] to Fairlie.

An alternative is to go inland to Darfield and south to Geraldine from there [look at a map to check the route]. It's no faster, but makes a change from that boring SH 1 stretch.

Hiro

(Thanks, We'll try this on the next trip.)

Thanks for the blog! It is an infectious read. We are planning a trip next (NZ) summer and your site has been a big help.

Great story! (July 2004) So glad you enjoyed the mountain! Maybe it's just me, but I'd
appreciate more photos. Hope your bruises are healing up. Looking forward
to your next installment.

Best regards,
Allison

Thanks for the feedback. The snow was fairly soft so I didn't get too many bruises. We're going to put up a photo gallery on the site.

Loved it (July 2004).  I think you should supply a wav. of you screaming like a girl, though.

~ Sooz

I think I need a crash barrier heading towards me at high speed to get the correct note and pitch.   :-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Good to see you made it to Geraldine 8-) You can also get there by going down SH1 and turning off at Rangitata, but SH1 is much more boring that the inland road.

Geraldine-Fairlie is a nice drive too.

When are you going to visit Blackball?

Cheers,
Hiro

Well, you haven't steered me wrong yet. We are looking at a trip on the TranzAlpine to Greymouth soon.

Just enjoyed your excellent Blog.  Superb comentary and photos.

I used to live in Arthurs Pass so was especially pleased to see you have been there.

BUT!!!  Next time you go there, take a camera, and go into the little chapel.  You'll be amazed.

Thane

I'm intrigued! I'll certainly look next time I'm there.

WOW! We checked it out. What a window!!

I stumbled (fortunately) upon your blog when searching for things NZ, as we are making our first trip there in February.  Unfortunately, it's one of those fly 'n bus tours, ranging from Cairns to the South Island.  At least we'll get an overview.  But your blog has opened our eyes and we're already planning a "return" trip to spend a couple of months at a much more liesurely pace.  Enjoyed your blog immensely, and I'm taking notes on things to see and do.  Thanks!

Jon Calhoun (Los Angeles)

Thanks Jon, Stay tuned this year, we're doing some longer trips.

Now I feel as if I know the whole family! Your site is wonderful.I have thoroughly enjoyed traveling along with you & looked forward to each new adventure. The pictures are outstanding, I had never imagined such beauty in your part of the world.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your travel log, it has to be the best site of its kind.  We currently live in Darfield and have done so for the last year. You have completely opended my eyes to the area I live in and intend to follow your example and visit some of the places you have talked about.  I look forward to January and wish your family all the best in your adventure in New Zealand.

Carol Robertson

Thanks Carol, you have some beautiful country around you too. I could easily live in Glentunnel.

18 years ago i saved up for two years to travel to new zealand for my first trip overseas, with boyfriend in tow. he is now my hubby ( ! ) and we are so excited about going back next week.
reading your blog is just pure joy. it reminds me of the beauty and quietude of those country drives.... the open sky, snowy mountains, the blue lakes. how lucky we are to be revisiting. thanks.

Marjorie

Thank you Marjorie. I hope you had a wonderful trip. .
