27th January 2004
Today we hiked to the very top of the mountain at Jack's Pass ski area. I did this back in October but this time Marisa and Gab were with me. It was drizzling all day but not unpleasantly and the top was cloud covered.
The photo here is from my October hike. There was no snow on the mountains while we were up there this time (though we couldn't actually see to confirm that).
We are going to come and camp here in the near future now that we have our tent and gear back.
We started off from the gate since we didn't want to get locked in. The gates are locked at 5:00pm. We are not used to Alpine walking so we found ourselves short of breath quite regularly. We did manage much better than on previous attempts however.
Marisa took some pictures of waterfalls along the way. I've included some examples here. She is really getting the hang of this camera. My own shots are quite ordinary by comparison.
We stopped for lunch along the path and got our second (or twentieth) wind.
The path above the ski lift was actually quite muddy and slippery and there were a couple of places where trees had fallen over it. We pressed on and eventually reached the first of the lodges.
Marisa and Gab wanted to press on and see where I had taken my October photos from. We climbed a wooden staircase to the summit but the cloud cover meant that we really couldn't see anything of a view. Nonetheless we were all very pleased with ourselves for making it to the top.
The photo below from my october hike shows the summit with snow.
The sensation of climbing the mountain was like climbing up through the clouds.
The trip down was a lot quicker and by the time we got home we were all pleasantly exhausted.
We ignored our diet for one night and had fish and chips.
I can't wait to come camping here.
