Last week I went skiing and I received a number of emails asking about the cost of winter activities. Skiing and snow boarding can be expensive of course but there are also great deals to be had.
On Mt Hutt, for example, it is possible to get a cheap package that includes lessons and all the gear. If you want to know more about packages have a look at nzski.co.nz or a similar site.
Now if you want a really low budget snow activity there is always tobogganing. The picture at the left is my son with his snow slider ($30). He has had many hours of sliding fun on hills and banks all over the place.
One of the places we go to do this for is Porter's Pass. It is a short drive (45 minutes) from Christchurch on the way to Arthur's pass. About 10km past the historic town of Springfield you wind up into the mountains and you will suddenly find a bunch of cars pulled over to the side of the road and kids everywhere on every sort of sliding contraption including garbage bags.
This low budget activity, along with the crafting of snowmen, snowball fights and making snow angels are undertaken with delight. I amazed how far you can skim a rock on a frozen lake. There is nothing like drinking hot coffee around an open fire in a hutt on an alpine walking trail. The best part about snow, for the uninitiated, is once your in it your inner child takes over and you remember how to make your own fun.
