Today we went over to Littleton to try and find a graveyard. We were actually looking for a particular graveyard that appears in the movie The Frighteners. We found it eventually after much driving up and down Littleton's unbelievably steep and winding streets.
Littleton is a charming place. It has a large and busy harbour and some truly spectacular views. Much of the town clings to the side of a cluster of small mountains called the Port Hills.
There are three main ways to get to Littleton from Christchurch. You can take the tunnel under the Port Hills. This the least interesting of the drives. You can drive over the Port Hills on Dyer's Pass Road to Govenors Bay and the drive back to Littleton around the bay. This offers some wonderful views.
Finally, you can drive up Dyer's Pass Rd until you get to the Sign of the Kiwi restaurant, turn left onto the Summit Road and take a long scenic drive along the top of the Port Hills. The road is narrow, winding and has awsome drops into ravines and down hillsides should your car leave the road. The reward for this driving challenge are incredible views over Christchurch, Littleton and many bays and coves. My advice is to drive slowly and stop wherever you can to take in the views.
